The Puntland State Police (PSP) was founded on February 22^nd, 1999, in accordance with Article 13, paragraph two of the Puntland State National Convention.

The initial force comprised 100 members from the Somali Government Police, 50 members from the Somali Armed Forces, and 50 members who were activists from the Puntland State SSDF, SNDU, and USP.

Over 25 years, the PSPF has grown to include 3,811 members. 21 Commanders and 29 Deputy Commanders have served the PSP in the past 25 years.
